Y’all, how is it now the later half of March? I have been moving at such a fast pace that I blinked and it was March and I hadn’t posted one single thing on SGSB in a month. I am so sorry! I’ve been so excited by the warmer weather and finding great pieces to share with all of you that I haven’t sat down and really written.

This is actually something I’ve struggled with for the past year or so. The more I continue to self-reflect on this issue, the more I realized my writer’s block/procrastination is due to constantly overbooking my schedule and saying I will do XYZ tomorrow, and then it’s a month later and I still haven’t done it.

This has impacted more than just my blog writing, I’ve been lazy about doing laundry, writing a letter that I’ve had the card on my desk for months to do, going to pick up the dry cleaning….the sad part is I could go on for a long time with all of the things I should have done. Have you ever felt this way?

Recently, Jess, from The Golden Girl blog, shared a video that hit me to my core. I’ve included the link below, but the premise is –

What if you take 5 seconds to start the task you keep putting off.

Just 5 seconds. After initially watching the video, I was super skeptical. There was no way that I would procrastinate less if I only did something for 5 seconds. Not a chance. I walked away from watching the video and went along with my day.

Then it came time to cook dinner. No problem at all – I absolutely love to cook. But doing the dishes – I DESPISE doing them. After enjoying the delicious vegan meal I cooked for myself, I looked at the four pans (yes, I’m one of those people that cooks with way too many pots, pans, bowls, utensils – it drives my family nuts) sitting by the sink and thought, “I’m exhausted, I’ll do them in the morning.” At that instant, Mel Robbins popped in my head – what if you just spent five seconds doing the dishes – could you just rinse them out? So, I did just that – I took one pan and started rinsing it out, then adding some soap. About 15 seconds later, I had the sponge in my hand and was full on washing the pan. And it didn’t stop there, I washed all of the dishes, loaded the dishwasher and then started deep cleaning the counter tops. Who had I become? Haha – just kidding, but seriously – how did I just convince myself to one of the things I hated the most?

Perfect for a wedding, Mardi Gras party or a fancy date night, this colorful polka dot black dress is the perfect item to wear

I’ve been adopting this mentality into everything I’ve been dragging my feet on doing lately and while it’s not always fun, I’m finding myself accomplishing so much more and feeling so much lighter because I’m less worried about doing something in the next few days – it’s already done.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to continue to try and do this in a lot more areas of my life. Here are just a few of the ways I’ve been using this mentality:

  • Just get yourself to the 5AM workout class, that is victory enough
  • Just say hello to that person you’ve been wanting to strike up a conversation up with
  • Turn on the music and dance it out (ok, so that one’s not so hard to convince myself to do, but sometimes when life gets overwhelming, it’s a good reminder)
  • Just hang up one of the 7 shirts you pulled out but, ultimately decided not to wear it
  • Just write one or two sentences, see where it takes you (cough….cough…30 minutes later and this is where we are 😛 Honestly, it’s not that I dislike writing – I love it, but I often feel like I don’t have a lot to say, so I just need to get started and the juices start flowing)

What is the one task that you always struggle to convince yourself to do? Would you mind sharing in the comments what tactic works for you to get it done?

P.S. How amazing is this colorful LBD? I cannot find enough places to wear it to. If you saw in Instagram a few weeks ago, I wore it to a Mardi Gras ball and it was such a hit! I also think it would be perfect for date night or for a more casual wedding this spring. I have a strong inclination that I will be wearing this dress a lot more in the coming months.

P.P.S. The video that sparked everything….
