Wedding Bells

Hey y’all – I’m sorry there was not a post on Friday. I had intended to have this one go live, but with all of the tragedies last week, it felt like the wrong time to write a lighthearted piece while surrounded with so much violence in the world. My heart goes out to all of those affected by these violent tragedies both here in the U.S. and abroad. I hope that we can continue to bring light to these acts of terror and begin the discussions required to make effective changes. The more I thought about this post, the more I realized that, in a weird way, it is fitting during this sad time. I am a firm believer that love will ultimately conquer over anything and the one of the biggest celebrations of love is seen at weddings. Funny how these coincidences happen sometimes….it always fascinates me when it does. My hope for this week is that as we still grieve, we continue to combat the hate with love and kindness towards each other.

Wedding season is in full swing! Among one of the many reasons I love wedding season is because it’s a great excuse to get all dolled up to dance the night away with friends and family. This year, I am honored to be attending two of my college friends’ weddings and have been on the lookout for a great dress to celebrate the occasion. A lot of the dresses that I fell in love with also came with a bit of sticker shock…it can get expensive to buy a new dress for every wedding and then there is the dilemma I have where I end up keeping the dress in my closet and only wearing it a few more times (because how many formal events do I really have to attend?)

I have recently tried to limit the amount of items I bring in my house (I’m trying to adopt a minimal philosophy, but I can’t completely commit – I mean, I love clothes way too much to have a capsule wardrobe, but I love the idea. So I am trying to only buy pieces that I really love and can wear multiple ways). Given my attempt at this new mindset, I have been using rental services, like Rent the Runway, for my outfits for special events.

There are so many considerations when it comes to summer wedding attire – like how formal is the event, where is the ceremony being held, the colors of the wedding, will you need a shawl/cover up, what types of shoes to wear….a wedding may be one of the most anxiety ridden fashion events for me, because I want to make sure I express my personality, am comfortable in the setting, and most of all don’t offend the bride. One of my most recent decisions has been around the color of my outfit and I have 3 rules when it comes to what color my dress needs to be:

  1. I will never wear white  (unless the invitation expressly states it)
  2. I try to avoid wearing the same color as the bridesmaid dresses (I’ve accidentally done this before where the shades were really similar and I felt awkward throughout the night; It may not be possible to avoid this one, so it’s not as important as the others; but, if I know ahead of time, I try to avoid it)
  3. I try to avoid wearing  black to weddings

The last “rule” can be difficult when the attire for the wedding is more formal because black can look so sleek and sophisticated. But, I try to avoid wearing black because it is supposed to be a celebration and let’s be honest, I love color. So what is a happy medium? This is where navy comes in. Navy has become the new black and is perfect for a celebration while still keeping your color a bit more subdue. What are your fashion rules for a summer wedding?
