What to Wear to a Black Tie Wedding in the Fall

Who doesn’t love to get dolled up and wear a gorgeous gown? Ok, I’m sure there are a lot of people that this sounds like torture, but for me – it’s one of my favorite things. There are only a handful of events where a gown is appropriate and since I’m in my late-20s, weddings are probably where I will wear a formal dress most often.

Although wedding season is starting to wind down, a lot of my friends are getting married this fall and winter. Dressing for a formal wedding has always been something I found tricky, especially in when the summer turns to fall. One of the weddings I have been invited to this season is a formal wedding, so I wanted to share a few of my tips on what to wear to a black tie wedding in the fall:

1. Choose a rich, fall color

There are so many gorgeous and rich colors that can be worn this fall, including this Sangria color. If y’all have been following SGSB for some time, you know that I love wearing color and I often times struggle with the fall/winter time season because there are less colors to choose from (than in the spring and summer). But, there are so many colors in stores this fall (*currently doing a happy dance*) and finding a colorful, fall dress is going to be super easy. In addition to this Sangria color, I am also loving red and navy tones.

2. Accentuate your assets

What part of your body do you absolutely love? Show it off? One of my favorite assets is my shoulders. I’ve always thought they were a gorgeous shape and love that this cold shoulder dress from Alex Evenings is the perfect way to highlight my shoulders. I also love the draping on the stomach because it has a slimming effect on the area that I am probably the most self conscious of.

3. Be comfortable

OK, so this may be my number one rule all the time, but when you are going to an event, you definitely want to feel comfortable – both physically and mentally. When choosing a dress, I think it’s so important to find one that makes you feel confident and one that isn’t poking, pulling or falling off. For me, that means I can’t/don’t wear strapless. I will inevitably be pulling it up every 5 minutes and will start to get annoyed with it pretty quickly. I love this Alex Evenings gown because it has the gorgeous off the shoulder look while also having the jeweled straps to keep the dress up. It’s also one of the most luxurious fabrics – I wish you could feel it.

4. Find the right fit (or have it altered to achieve the desired fit)

I was surprised when I put on this Alex Evenings dress that it fit me like a glove. The length was just right to wear a shorter heel (what I wear anyways) or I can get away with flats (I’ll mostly spend my night on the dance floor, so having flats on can be lifesaver).

The only thing that I need to get altered on this dress to make the dress fit me is the jeweled straps. Since I’m am smaller in the bust than in the waist/hips, I usually have to size up to fit my lower half and having straps fall down is a common problem I deal with in all of my clothing. Taking in the straps is going to be a super quick (and inexpensive fix), so this dress was a no-brainer decision for me.

I personally believe it’s extremely important to find the right fit in all clothing, but especially in formal wear. The right fit can truly make or break the look of a garment. From my experience, it’s almost impossible to find a gown that fits right of the rack, but only having to make minor adjustments, like taking a 1/2 and inch off the shoulder straps or having it hemmed, is winning in my book.

5. Have fun!

When looking for a formal dress, have fun with it! You are supposed to be celebrating love, so why not be celebratory in what you are wearing? For me, this Alex Evenings dress had a gorgeous color that is completely different than the common black dress. Plus I love the gunmetal silver beading which gives the dress a bit of old school glam.

What are your tips for finding the perfect wedding guest attire? I would love to hear them in the comments, below!

A little side note, these past couple of days at Fashion Week have been more than I could have ever imagined and I still have four more days in the city! I have some amazing things planned, including visiting the Alex Evenings offices to see their gowns up close and personal today, so be sure to follow along on Instagram (@EmilySGSB) to see and hear about my trip in real time.
