Style Resolution: Pencil Skirt

I was compensated by Gwynnie Bee to write this post about my Style Resolutions, but I have been a member of their clothing subscription service for awhile. All opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting me and the brands that make Something Gold, Something Blue possible.

I spend most of my time in business casual work wear for my full time job. With the changes in my body from spending so much time on the spin bike, I have had a hard time finding pencil skirts that work well with my body. When Gwynnie Bee challenged me to share my style resolution, I knew wearing a pencil skirt to work was going to be a trend that I wanted to try again. I'm sharing my take of how to style a pencil skirt for a corporate office on the curvy style and travel blog, Something Gold, Something Blue.Since I spend 50-60+ hours a week in business casual attire, I want it to be fun and comfortable while also looking pulled together and chic. (If you haven’t checked out my posts on having fun with your work wardrobe, you can check one of my earliest posts about adding color and personality to your work wardrobe.)

When Gywnnie Bee approached me about sharing a few of my style resolutions with all of you (if you missed my first style resolution, you can check it out here), it took me a few minutes to decide which trends I had been neglecting, but the first idea I had was wearing a pencil skirt. The past couple of years, I have avoided wearing pencil skirts because I could not find one that looked chic while also being comfortable to wear for my typical 10-12 hour work days. I have also had issues with the length of the skirt and how much it will ride up when I sit down. You know how skirts and dresses get like 6 inches shorter when you sit down…it seems to always happen to me. So, I make a big point of sitting down in all of my work pants, tops, skirts, dresses before taking the tags off of them. Let’s just say, early on in my career, I had a few too many days of being uncomfortable and spending money on pieces that only got worn once because they looked great when I was standing up, but ended up not working out for my meeting filled/working at a computer career.

When I received this City Chic ruffled hem black pencil skirt in my recent shipment from Gwynnie Bee, I immediately fell in love. The little peplum ruffle at the bottom added a bit of length and also adds a nice shape because it draws your eyes (or at least mine) away from my mid-section (which if I’m being honest, is the one part of my body that I continually struggle to love, especially in straighter clothing because it is a bit more accentuated and one of the main reasons I have avoided pencil skirts for so long; but this year I have decided to embrace my body positivity journey and let those parts that I am not as much in love with to shine).

To keep the look simple, I paired with with a gorgeous blouse from Target’s curvy collection, Ava & Viv, a nude pair of power heels (aka. pumps), a subtle statement necklace and a great tote to carry the essentials. After wearing this outfit to work last week, I decided to purchase the skirt from Gwynnie Bee to be able to continue to push myself out of my comfort zone and feature it in other outfits (one of the great parts of GB’s subscription service is that you can purchase the items you had tried through the service at a discounted rate to be able to style them forever – or at least as long as you would like to).

What style trend are you excited/nervous/scared out of your mind to try? I dare you to do it – I can’t tell you how liberated you will feel!

Thank you so much! I felt similarly when I first starting working. It think it takes a bit to get used to the “rules”/environment of your office and also finding pieces that you love but fit within the culture of your office!
