You know how a great hair day can change the outlook of your day? Well, my curls have a mind of their own – some days they look great, others – not so much!! With all of the travel (and climate changes) I put my hair through, I have been looking for a solution to have a fantastic hair day every day. When I was approached a few weeks ago with the opportunity to try TRESemmé’s Beauty-Full Volume collection, I was ecstatic – this collection is known for creating ‘touchable everyday volume’ and I am always willing to try anything to achieve luscious hair!
Let me tell you, since I started using the products, I have had a great hair day (and positive outlook) every day. Finally, products to help me to whip my curls into shape! Since I have had such a great experience, I wanted to share with you my step-by-step tips for creating gorgeous, touchable curls.
Step 1: Wash + Condition
Starting with a clean slate is extremely important when wanting to create gorgeous natural curls (or really any hairstyle). And how you cleanse your hair is really creates the foundation for you to add your style.
Because I have been using the TRESemmé products, I really should have titled this Condition + Wash because with the Beauty-Full Volume products, you start with the conditioner and then shampoo (gasp! – I know, y’all – this goes against everything I have been taught for the last 25 years). The reverse wash and care process is what sets this collection apart from other products and why I believe it helps to make my curls look gorgeous!
From my understanding, the pre-wash conditioner is supposed to soften the hair and protect it during the washing process. And you wash away the weight that the conditioner adds by using the shampoo. It did take a lot of will power to remember that I was conditioning my hair first, but the outcome was fantastic! Even before I added any product, I noticed how much softer and lighter my hair felt – it took me back to the day after I get a haircut. I couldn’t believe it!
Tip: Start the pre-wash conditioner at the base of your hair and work up towards your roots. This will allow the product to be placed on the parts of the hair that really need the Fiber Polishing technology and it will evenly distribute the product so you don’t end up with oily roots.

Step 2: Gain control over the Frizz
After towel-drying your hair to remove the excess moisture, use the TRESemmé Beauty-Full Volume Hair Maximizer to fight frizz.
Tip: For shoulder length hair, use about a quarter-sized amount of product. A little goes a long ways.
One of my biggest frustrations with my curly hair is how frizzy it will gets if I don’t prep my hair properly. The Hair Maximizer contains ingredients to fight frizz and enhance the smoothness of my hair without weighing it down (essential for curls).
Step 3: Define your curls
Use a product to help bring out the natural shape of your curls, like the TRESemmé Beauty-Full Volume Touchable Bounce Mousse. By adding definition product, you can accentuate the natural shape of your curls and ensure that they stay put after blow drying.
In my experience the amount of product needed in this step will vary significantly based on the type of curls that you have. Mine are on the looser slide, so I need a bit more product to achieve my style. What was great about the TRESemmé mousse was that even though I was using a ton of product, it did not leave my hair feeling crunchy (I thought crunchy was the only way to style my curls in high school – hiding those pictures now).
Step 4: Dry your hair
Allow your hair about 15 minutes to air dry before introducing the blow dryer – this will allow your curls to form to their natural shape prior to jostling them around with the heat. If you want your hair to have lots of volume, flip you head upside down when you start to blow dry (this will also heat the hair from the back to front and reduce frizz). Once your hair is about 75% dry, blow some cool air using the blow dryer to set the style. Completely stop blow drying your hair when it is about 80% dry to allow it more time to air dry, again, this will help to reduce the amount of frizz.
Step 5: Finish styling
Take a look at the overall style of your hair. Is there one piece of hair that has decided to not cooperate today? You know the one – there is always one piece! For that piece of hair, I take my curling iron and wrap it around for a few seconds and then comb my fingers through it to make it look natural against my curls. Then to hold my style I like to finish it off with a touch of hairspray. The TRESemmé Beauty-Full Volume Flexible Finish Hairspray did not make my curls stiff and the ultra-fine mist allowed for my hair to move naturally all day. Bonus!! I was able to achieve my #IWokeUpLikeThis look and have a gorgeous head of curls for the day!
If you are looking to create soft, voluminous hair (even for my non-curly hair ladies), I highly recommend checking out the TRESemmé Beauty-Full Volume collection! The process of using these products is a bit different and will take some time to get used to, but I have not had curls this soft (without a ton of frizz) in a long time.
